Forest School FAQs for Parents and Educator

FAQ

  • What is Forest School?

Forest School is a nature-based learning program where children explore and learn outdoors through hands-on experiences. It fosters curiosity, confidence, resilience, and a love of nature.

  • Where is Little Wise Owls located?

Our programs run in Chilliwack, BC, at two beautiful outdoor locations: Fairfield and Rotary (Sardis). Both sites use natural spaces to create a safe, engaging, and hands-on learning environment where children can explore, discover, and connect with nature.

  • What are the class sizes?

We maintain small class sizes with a 7:1 child-to-educator ratio to ensure each child receives individualized attention, safe supervision, and meaningful hands-on learning experiences in our outdoor classrooms.

  • What should my child wear?

Children should come dressed for the weather: waterproof boots, warm layers, rain jackets, hats, and gloves. Outdoor play happens rain or shine. Make sure to check out our gear guide for more information and recommendations.

  • Is outdoor learning safe?

Absolutely! Safety is our top priority at Little Wise Owls Outdoor Learning. Our educators are trained in first aid, CPR, and forest school principles, and all staff conduct daily risk assessments of our outdoor spaces. Children are supervised at all times while exploring, climbing, building, and playing, allowing them to experience adventurous and hands-on learning in a controlled, safe environment.

Outdoor learning also helps children develop confidence, resilience, and risk management skills in a natural setting, all while being supported by caring, qualified educators.

  • Do you accommodate allergies or special needs?

Absolutely. We work with families to ensure a safe, inclusive environment, including dietary restrictions and special requirements.

  • Who leads the programs?

Our programs are led by Ms. Mandy Liable, Owner and Lead Early Childhood Educator at Little Wise Owls. She has over 12 years of experience in early childhood education, with more than 3.5 years focused on outdoor learning. Ms. Mandy is a certified CNAC Forest Practitioner, ensuring all activities are safe, age-appropriate, and encourage child-led outdoor exploration.

  • What is CNAC Forest Practitioner training?

The CNAC Forest Practitioner certification equips educators with the skills to plan, lead, and assess forest school programs safely and effectively. It covers risk assessment, child-led exploration, nature connection, and experiential learning, ensuring children have engaging, educational, and safe outdoor experiences.
